Nine Educational Programs for the Next Economy

The New Advisory Group was retained by a client in the Middle East to design, and develop a plan to launch, a new post-secondary educational enterprise to support the continuous and rapid up-skilling of the country's workforce to meet the challenges of the modern global economy.  This translates directly into the critical human capital needs of both national companies and multinational companies operating or expanding into the region.

The specialized educational enterprise – provisionally called The Next Economy Institute (NEI) – is to provide short-form (two-years or less) educational programs in direct support of industry development.  The near- and mid-horizon focus of the Institute will be on education in computer and data sciences (CDS) fundamentals with an additional layer of application- or industry-specific education.

The core concept of programs to be offered by the institute is CDS + X where X represents a variable body of application- or industry-specific knowledge.  The same core CDS program can prepare graduates for careers as diverse as STEM teaching at the high-school level, additive manufacturing technicians (the modern equivalent of machinists), digital media professionals, and construction and project managers.

The NEI is designed to be scalable, paring global-standard English-language digital content and online instruction with classrooms and workshops/studios throughout the home country and, perhaps, the region.  The Institute will focus on company custom programs for national and multinational commercial and industrial clients. The types of short-form programs anticipated include:

1.    Applied Data Sciences (or Business Analytics)
•    industrial systems (e.g., manufacturing, logistics, oil field management)
•    retail and e-commerce
•    smart cities and public services

2.    Digital Media
•    digital media technologies
•    media management and economics
•    applications in publishing, entertainment, education, sales and marketing

3.    Health Services Informatics
•    public health monitoring and epidemiology
•    health care processes and outcomes analytics

4.    Web Development
•    full stack design and development technologies
•    user experience
•    testing and performance

5.    Virtual Reality (VR)
•    development tools and technologies
•    fundamentals and design principles
•    scenarios and applications in engineering, architecture, and business

6.    Tech Development Project Management
•    concepts, roles, tools
•    budget and schedule
•    risk analysis

7.    Additive Manufacturing
•    materials management and production planning
•    configuration supervision
•    CAD model management

8.    Mechatronic (electromechanical + computational) Systems
•    automation and robotics
•    machine vision/inspection
•    availability assurance

9.    Autonomous Vehicle Applications
•    transportation (public and private)
•    industrial systems material handling (internal transport, e.g., AGV)
•    supply network logistics (external transport between partners)
